X-40. CM 1.5.1045 (Interior). Trench M. Medieval Pottery. Importred ware, from central and southern Italy. Bowl. Fragmentary small carinated bowl with curving wall, tapering rim and a low false foot. Ø rim 11.5 cm, Ø base 5.7 cm, wth. 0.5 cm. Fabric 5YR 7/3 (pink). Hard fine fabric with a clean break containing black and quartzite particles. Wholly covered in a white slip decorated with light blue and light red. The bowl shows no signs of glazing. On interior brownish red lines radiate from centre. Every second line ends in a rhomboid bud. The space in between has blots of light blue. The exterior is decorated with vertical lines in light blue extending from the rim to the carination just above the foot. Parallels: no apparent parallels to the decoration, though it seems Islamic-inspired. The foot and the carination on the exterior have a parallel from Crypta Balbi, though the bowl in this case is larger, Molinari 1990, no. 379. Origin: central/southern Italy, perhaps Sicily. Date: end 12th-beginning 13th century
